A man after my own heart, Yoshi. I love this guy.

How do you cope after a japanese tsunami? With coffee and vinyl records of course.

Here’s an inspiring tale of some musicians in Kinshasa Congo up against terrible obstacles to make and perform their music. Mark Kermode of BBC four rated this film in his top 3 of 2011.

…love this guy!  it almost seems like a joke, but you soon realize that harsh circumstances and the complete lack of government funding, and missing five strings still can’t stop true musical talent! We are all so spoiled.

John Coltrane intuitively knew in his heart that science and facts are not the only truth. That God ultimately is sovereign and created all that we study through science. The best live performance to illustrate this would be something from his ” A Love Supreme” but there is none to be found that I know of?

However this piece with Mcoy Tyner on piano also exemplifies for me the profound statements of St. Paul in his letter to the romans:

“ In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.” Romans ch. 8 vs.26&27.

John Coltrane plays music that goes beyond words or simple hooks and melodies, it searches and grasps at truths we don’t understand.

Truths in the realms of God’s understanding not ours. Our postmodern world has seemed to given up and will not even look at the writings of St. Paul. Forget Rumi or Sam Harris Or Dawkins or Deepak Chopra their writings don’t even come close to what Paul writes in just one chapter of his letter.  Romans chapter 8 is perhaps one the most profound writings we have in all our libraries!

Paul Simons; "Afterlife"

Even Paul Simon who’s not religious and does not practice his Judaism, ponders the big questions of our place in the ever expanding universe. Are we really just an accident the result of a very very long period of mutations , dripping chemistries, lightning and stagnant ponds? How can one fully accept the post modern view of a heartless evolution resulting in us and our world when in our heart of hearts we intuitively know that the miracle of a baby born only nine months after two people fall in love and make love is a wondrous and much deeper reality of consequence than a false stack of facts that scientists would have us believe. There is a signature in the cell as Stephen Meyer wrote and it is God’s, whether you can see it or not doesn’t eliminate it. Science knows things only within its limited scope but there is so much more beyond its arrogant nearsightedness. Paul Simon senses this even though intellectually he’s a postmodern man.

Seems like everyone has already seen this?, he was even on Ellen I believe? Anyway Nick P. showed me this over Christmas and I gotta say I can’t get enough of it. the video for The Black Keys, Lonely boy, just fantastic!

I said a couple days ago Bon Iver had the song of the year? but perhaps,  it’s this one by Elbow? eh Russell,  a wonderful uplifting song and performance! enjoy…

Detlev Schlicter of the Austrian school of economics talks to Max Keiser, at about the 12:40 mark, about the very real similarities and differences between the depression of the 30’s and the culmination of post war economic policy. Economics seems very boring except when it effects everyone of our futures, and explains some of the occupy movement. This is also why Ron Paul is finally getting some respect from the media. This reality is far more compelling and consequential than the nonsense on reality TV.

Maybe he’s ripped off Sufjan Stevens, and maybe the critics don’t agree? but I think like NPR this may be the song of the year? besides he wrote a song called Calgary, so I have a soft spot for him. I just love this song by Bon Iver, “Perth” performed on Jools Holland.
